Weight loss and looking one’s best are top priorities for many in the fitness community, including bodybuilding legend Arnold Schwarzenegger. In a recent Arnold’s Pump Club newsletter, Schwarzenegger discussed a study-backed five-pound weight loss solutions and shared his go-to protein shake recipe.

Arnold’s passion for fitness dates back to his early gym days in Graz, Austria. He later conquered the American bodybuilding scene, securing seven Mr. Olympia titles with his impressive muscles and stature.

In retirement, Schwarzenegger’s commitment to wellness remains unwavering. Now, he aims to shed light on weight loss, focusing on meal-replacement drinks with protein powder and other essential ingredients he swears by.

Schwarzenegger on Effective Weight Loss Solutions

Schwarzenegger, citing studies, points out that choosing a meal replacement drink during calorie restriction leads to more weight loss. Additionally, individuals adopting this approach have a better chance of maintaining their weight loss.

“The 5-Pound Weight Loss Swap – Could weight loss really be as simple as a meal swap?”

“Research suggests that substituting one meal with a protein shake could help you lose five extra pounds compared to regular dieting.”

“Scientists reviewed studies comparing people on a calorie-restricted diet to those who reduced calories and drank a meal replacement shake. On average, those who used protein shakes lost more weight and were more likely to keep it off after three months and one year.” 

Moreover, Schwarzenegger contends that meal replacement drinks offer security, preventing health-detrimental decisions for individuals.

“Meal replacements aren’t magical, but they are effective because they prevent you from being your own worst enemy. Research shows that we typically underestimate how many calories we eat (by about 47 percent!) and overestimate how much we burn.” 

Furthermore, meal replacement drinks excel in ease of preparation compared to whole-food meals.

Schwarzenegger’s Protein Shake Recipe

For those unfamiliar with making protein shakes, Schwarzenegger shares his Rocky Balboa-style recipe, featuring one whole raw egg.

  • 1-2 scoops of plant-protein powder
  • 5g of Creatine
  • 2 oz of Cherry juice
  • 8 oz of Almond milk
  • 1 Banana
  • 1 whole egg

Schwarzenegger, critical of supplements, makes an exception for protein shakes and meal replacement drinks.

“We are critical of many supplements because the hype doesn’t match the science, but protein shakes and meal replacements are an exception. Research suggests they can help burn fat, reduce hunger, and support overall metabolic health.”

To test the effectiveness of the ‘five-pound’ weight loss swap, Schwarzenegger recommends replacing the most challenging meal of the day with a protein shake.

“If you want to see if this strategy works for you, take your most challenging meal of the day (usually breakfast or lunch) and swap it with a protein shake. We like using a high-quality protein powder, adding a handful of fruit, one spoonful of nut butter, and 8 oz of your beverage. Blend it, and enjoy!”

Schwarzenegger actively informs the public about protein intake, citing studies. He highlights a study comparing the absorption rates of 25g and 100g of protein, revealing a prolonged protein synthesis of up to 12 hours with the higher intake.
