On Sunday, June 8, Alex Gazan celebrated a major achievement, securing her fourth CrossFit Games qualification after winning the Northern California Classic In-Person Qualifying Event in Sacramento, California. However, just days later, Alex Gazan season took a serious hit when she sustained a fractured fibula in a car crash, putting her CrossFit Games prospects in jeopardy.
However, just two days later, her situation took a drastic turn. She felt fortunate to be alive. At the same time, she questioned whether she could still compete at the Games in August.
On June 10, tragedy struck during a road trip in California. Gazan and her husband were involved in a serious car accident. She sustained a small fracture in her fibula. Gazan shared on Instagram that she is experiencing swelling in her leg and had “glass where glass should never be.”
“Hoping for a speedy recovery and getting back to doing what I love soon,” she wrote.
Furthermore, Gazan’s coach, Justin Cotler, expressed uncertainty about her recovery timeline. He said it’s unclear if she will be ready for the CrossFit Games from August 1 to 3 or the World Fitness Project Tour Event II at the end of the month.
“Everything is in wait-and-see mode,” Cotler told the Morning Chalk Up.
Moreover, Cotler emphasized caution about rushing her back into competition. He stressed that Gazan needs to be fully healed before returning.
“She’s 23 and superhuman…but we’re not going to rush her or jeopardize anything,” he said.
“Seven weeks [until the Games] might be pushing it.”
Currently, Gazan is still recovering in California. She has undergone medical treatment to remove pieces of glass from her arms, legs, and face. She is also receiving care for multiple open wounds. A GoFundMe campaign has been established to support her and her husband during this difficult time.

Alex Gazan Breakout Season Interrupted by Car Crash Injury
Alex Gazan’s breakout season has been interrupted by a car accident injury. Indeed, the timing could not have been worse. Up to this point, Gazan was having an incredible year and seemed poised for continued success.
Earlier in the season, she skipped the In-Affiliate Semifinals. Instead, she focused on the Northern California Classic IPQE—and she won. Additionally, in May, she claimed victory at the WFP Tour Event I in Indianapolis. Clearly, her goals stretched beyond these wins.
“Our goal is to win the WFP and the Games,” Cotler told us in May.
Now, however, Cotler’s focus has shifted completely. Above all, his priority is to get Gazan healthy again.
Despite the setback, both athlete and coach remain optimistic. They see this as just a minor bump in the road.
“The way I look at it is that she is 23 years old,” Cotler said.
Moreover,
“Thank God she is still alive. It’s just a bump in the road, and the truth of the matter is if the Games aren’t in the picture this year, then we’ll try to look to get healthy for WFP or the Rogue Invitational.”
Finally, he added: “This is life, man. This is literally a case of what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.”
