The 2025 World’s Strongest Man opened with a test of speed and power. The event was the Loading Medley, a staple of early WSM competition. Each group of five athletes faced four implements, each weighing 130 kilograms (287 pounds).

Next, they raced to load the objects over increasing distances — five, 10, 15, and 20 meters. Every second counted. The fastest athlete in each group earned valuable points and early momentum heading into the next events.

Meanwhile, Sacramento delivered hot conditions. The temperature hovered in the mid-80s under partly sunny skies. Despite the heat, the energy from the crowd remained high throughout the day.

Finally, organizers introduced expanded bleacher seating, a first for WSM in Sacramento. Fans packed the venue, eager to watch elite strongmen carry, lift, and push their way toward the final. They came for strength — and got it in spades.

2025 World’s Strongest Man Loading Medley Recap

Group One

First, Group One began on a street platform outside the California Railroad Museum. The athletes loaded four sandbags — the first shaped like a Husafell Stone, the others cylindrical — into Cybertrucks. Next, Evans and Schoonwinkel kicked off the heats. Both were heavily chalked, and neither had the advantage of seeing previous runs. Then, they moved in sync through the first two bags.

However, Schoonwinkel dropped a bag at the truck, letting Evans pull ahead. Meanwhile, Schoonwinkel tried to recover ground by the end. Still, it wasn’t enough to win the heat. Consequently, Schoonwinkel shook his head in frustration over his early mistake.

After that, Andrade faced off against Tom Stoltman, the first to wear a lifting belt. Immediately, Stoltman exploded off the line, tossing the first two bags from a distance. Therefore, he left Andrade behind and never eased up. Meanwhile, Williams ran solo in the final heat, lacking a direct competitor. Although he moved swiftly through the first two bags, he slowed near the third and labored with the fourth. Nonetheless, his clean run kept him near the group’s top times.

Group Two

Initially, Group Two faced hotter conditions as the sun rose higher. Hooper and Haynes started the group. Notably, Hooper wore a cap to block the sun, a new move for him. While he struggled on the first bag, he quickly turned on the jets. Despite Haynes’s effort, Hooper’s pace was too fast to match.

Then, Derwinsky and Ragg stepped up. Derwinsky sported a backward cap and gloves, while Ragg trailed behind early on. However, Ragg caught up by the third bag and took the lead by the fourth. Interestingly, he left his mouthpiece on his ear the entire time but still managed the group’s fourth-fastest time.

Finally, Johnson ran solo on his WSM debut. The crowd, wearing cheeseheads, roared for him during his entrance. Unfortunately, without a heat partner, his pace lagged behind others in the group. Nevertheless, the crowd stayed loud despite his tentative lift of the fourth bag, and he finished with the second slowest time across the first two groups.

Group Three

At the start of Group Three, Hatton and Flowers competed. Flowers returned after withdrawing from his last WSM due to injury. To support his knee, he wore kinesiology tape and a band. While Hatton, being shorter, had an early advantage in bag placement, he needed more strides to cover the distance.

However, Hatton fatigued toward the end after a fast start. Meanwhile, Flowers maintained a steady pace from start to finish and won the heat. Afterwards, Kieliszkowski and Nel faced off. Both scorched the opening bag, but Kieliszkowski dropped the third prematurely near the truck.

Therefore, Nel won the heat but finished slower than Flowers. Fans encouraged Kieliszkowski loudly, knowing he underperformed in a bag-loading event suited to his strengths. Finally, Evans Nana ran the solo heat, firing up the crowd. Although his third bag lift seemed clunkier than the first two, he closed the session with emotional gratitude to fans.

Group Four

First up in Group Four were Mitchell and Richardson. Mitchell appeared leaner than usual, possibly preparing for the event’s speed demands. Initially, Richardson led the heat. Unfortunately, he failed to lift the third sandbag and signaled medical staff, likely due to a biceps tear that ended his 2025 run.

Next, Fojtů faced off against Hoath. Fojtů threw sandbags well before reaching the truck. Hoath struggled to keep pace. Despite pausing briefly before the last bag, Fojtů’s dominant pace earned him the group win.

Finally, Boudreault ran solo. Returning to the arena where he podiumed in 2021, he lifted the first bag vertically instead of the typical horizontal method. The time impact was unclear. Still, a fast fourth bag gave him confidence, and he paced the stage sure of his lead. His time of 42.81 seconds nearly matched Fojtů’s.

Group Five

To start Group Five, Flynn and Singleton entered with different energies. Flynn carefully examined the bags and mapped a plan. Singleton entered with swagger, feeding off the crowd’s energy. Suddenly, Singleton grabbed his left biceps in pain. Medical staff immediately escorted him off the competition floor.

Next, Luke Stoltman and Guardione ran the penultimate heat. Tom Stoltman cheered from the sidelines. Luke fell behind early but caught up in a photo finish, electrifying the crowd.

Finally, Kordiyaka closed the group as a clear favorite. His pace appeared calm, measured, and efficient. Consequently, his clean run earned him the group win and a strong finish to day one’s opening event.
