The seventh annual 2025 Rogue Invitational CrossFit took place from October 31 to November 2 at P&J Live in Aberdeen, Scotland. On Day 1, 20 men and 20 women launched into three demanding workouts combining gymnastics, barbell work, carries, and stamina. The venue crackled with energy as athletes pushed hard to establish early positions in the overall standings.

From the start, the men’s division showed clear frontrunners, with Justin Medeiros immediately signaling he intended to dominate. Meanwhile, the women’s division ended the day in a rare three-way tie at the top, creating a highly competitive scenario where any misstep could be costly. Day 1 demonstrated that smooth transitions, technical precision, and broad capacity are as crucial as raw power and speed.

Recovery, strategy, and pacing emerged as early themes. Athletes had to manage fatigue across multiple events, making smart decisions about when to push and when to conserve energy. With three more events scheduled on Day 2, competitors now face a weekend that rewards not only physical capacity but also tactical intelligence.

Ricky Garard 🇦🇺 stole the spotlight in the first event of the day, “Granite City,” posting a blistering 25:16.44 (19:09) to earn the maximum points. Roman Khrennikov 🇷🇺 followed closely at 25:50.14 (19:25), and Adler held on with 25:31.69 (19:27). Those splits were crucial in determining the final podium.

In the sprint event, Colten Mertens 🇺🇸 dominated with 5:49.38 (2:48), pushing forward from the mid-pack. Then in the final “Pedicab” event, Roman Khrennikov took the win in 3:11.47 (2:23), but the gap Adler built earlier proved decisive. 2025 Rogue Invitational CrossFit Overall Standings After Day 1

The cumulative points after three events highlighted Justin Medeiros’ dominance on the men’s side, while the women remain in an intense three-way tie. Every placement in individual events contributed to these totals, making every second count.

Consistency and transition efficiency proved pivotal. Medeiros’ early win and subsequent high finishes solidified his lead, but several athletes are within striking distance, promising a competitive Day 2. For the women, Alex Gazan, Dani Speegle, and Laura Horváth all sit on 235 points, meaning the leaderboard could change dramatically with just one event.

Athletes further down the leaderboard must weigh risks against rewards. Strategic pacing, recovery, and event-specific strengths will define the next stage, while early mistakes may require aggressive attempts to climb.

Day 1 Events – Friday, October 31

Event 1 – “Nessie”

Workout: 160 double unders → 80 m handstand walk → 60 GHD sit-ups → 40 box jump‑overs → 20/16 log bar muscle‑ups

This opening event tested athletes’ gymnastics skills, core strength, and ability to move under fatigue. Speed on transitions proved critical, as the workout demanded continuous movement and precise technical execution. On the men’s side, Justin Medeiros distinguished himself with an early lead, demonstrating both conditioning and efficiency.

For the women, Danielle Brandon set the pace with a commanding finish, nearly a full minute ahead of the field. Several athletes showed strong openings, hinting at potential overall contenders for the weekend. The combination of handstand walks, double unders, and muscle-ups immediately separated the technically proficient from the purely strong.

Performance in Nessie also served as an early test of mental focus. Athletes who maintained composure during unbroken reps and rapid transitions gained valuable points, while small mistakes cost precious seconds. This event foreshadowed the tactical and physical demands the rest of the weekend would impose.

Event 2 – “William Wallace”

Workout: 5 log clean & presses (men 215 lb / women 150 lb) → 40 ft yoke carry → 1 power stair

The second event demanded raw strength and stamina, with a focus on short, explosive bursts. Technical execution and efficient transitions determined who could sustain power across the three rounds. Jayson Hopper won the men’s field in 3:45.55, demonstrating that strategic pacing can yield big gains.

For the women, Alex Gazan returned from injury to claim the event in 4:59.77. Her performance underscored the importance of maintaining composure under pressure. Many athletes struggled on the yoke and power stair sections, highlighting how minor weaknesses can compound under fatigue.

The results shook up the standings, giving early hints about potential podium contenders. Athletes with strong gymnastics and strength capabilities began to assert themselves, while slower transitions forced others to play catch-up.

Event 3 – “Tax Collector”

Workout: 4 rounds of 10 back squats (315/225 lb) → 10 dumbbell snatches (100/70 lb) → 10 sandbag cleans (150/100 lb)

This event punished lower-body strength and endurance under accumulated fatigue. Colten Mertens dominated the men’s field, winning in 10:27.66, while Olivia Kerstetter took the women’s event in 11:38.59. Heavy implements and multiple rounds forced athletes to manage their pacing carefully.

The men’s leaderboard became more stratified after this workout, with top athletes extending gaps through consistency, while slower transitions left others scrambling. For women, the three-way tie persisted, highlighting the competitive depth and the fine margins separating podium contenders.

Endurance, mental focus, and fatigue management became the deciding factors. Athletes who excelled in technical execution and minimized wasted energy gained crucial advantages heading into Day 2, setting the stage for potential dramatic shifts in standings.
