On Friday, July 4th, the 2025 Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest kicked off the holiday weekend. This year, more than 40,000 fans attended in person, while millions watched from home. Notably, Joey Chestnut made a return, eating 70.5 hot dogs to secure his 17th title.
However, Chestnut did not compete at the official 2024 Nathan’s event after signing with a rival company. Despiteorganizers’ efforts to meet his demands, he chose to represent Impossible Foods, a plant-based company that makes a vegan hot dog. Earlier, in June, he announced his comeback to Coney Island.
Meanwhile, Chestnut stayed active in other ways. In September, he faced Takeru Kobayashi on Netflix’s Labor Day special, “Unfinished Beef.” Importantly, the 10-minute contest banned dunking hot dogs or buns in liquids, adding a fresh challenge.
Ultimately, Chestnut not only maintained his dominance but pushed the limits of competitive eating. By shattering his own world record with 83 hot dogs and buns consumed, he reaffirmed his place at the top of the sport.

2025 Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest Results
Since 2007, Joey Chestnut 🇺🇸 has dominated the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest. In fact, he has now won 17 of the last 19 titles. Moreover, he has surpassed the 60-hot dog mark in 16 of his last 18 competitions. Notably, that includes six performances over 70 hot dogs. Impressively, he still holds the event record of 76 hot dogs, set in 2021.
This year, Chestnut returned to the top. As expected, he delivered a dominant performance. Once again, he pulled away from the field. Ultimately, he consumed 70.5 hot dogs to take first place. Meanwhile, Patrick Bertoletti 🇺🇸 followed with 46.5. Additionally, James Webb 🇦🇺 placed third with 45.5.

James Webb Documentary: James Can Eat
In recent years, James Webb 🇦🇺 has emerged as a top contender. Previously, he finished third at Nathan’s two years in a row. Now, he is considered one of the sport’s most dangerous challengers. Currently, Generation Iron is producing a documentary on his journey to the top.
The film, James Can Eat, follows Webb’s rise as Australia’s top-ranked eater—and the fourth-ranked competitor in the world. Throughout the documentary, he battles physical limits, personal setbacks, and global rivals. Eventually, he sets his sights on dethroning Joey Chestnut.
Importantly, the film captures his most intimate moments. At one point, he reflects on walking away from a promising soccer career. At another, he relives the recovery from a near-paralyzing illness. Simultaneously, his viral rise to fame unfolds in real time.
Beyond the personal story, the documentary addresses the toll of the sport. Specifically, it highlights the grueling training and health risks. Additionally, it raises questions about the ethics of competitive eating. Ultimately, the film builds toward a dramatic showdown at Nathan’s. In the final moments, unexpected chaos threatens to derail everything.
