The 2025 Ireland’s Strongest Man contest was held on May 5 in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Then, the single-day event drew 16 competitors from across the country. Altogether, the athletes faced five demanding challenges designed to test raw power and endurance.

Next, the lineup of events included the Bar Bending, Incline Log Press, Truck Arm-Over-Arm, Car Deadlift Hold, and Loading Race. Each time, the events pushed the athletes to their physical limits. In particular, the Truck Arm-Over-Arm and Car Deadlift Hold proved to be crowd favorites.

Meanwhile, Ruairi O’Hagan delivered a consistent and commanding performance. In fact, he claimed 68.5 out of a possible 80 points. As a result, he earned the overall victory and the title of Ireland’s Strongest Man.

Finally, Cillein Groom finished just 1.5 points behind O’Hagan to take second place. Shortly after, Daniel McElroy claimed third and completed the podium. Together, the top three showcased Ireland’s growing strength talent on a national stage.

  4. Kyle McGowan — 3 in 38.31s

  6. Daniel McElroy — 3 in 43.03s
  7. Ivan Gannon — 3 in 51.4s
  8. Shaun Diver — 3 in 54.26s
  9. Matt Pollard — 3 in 57.59s

  14. Gerard Buckley — 2 in 27.06s
  15. Jack Harkin — 2 in 28.07s
  16. Gavin McNamee — 2 in 31.57s

To open the contest, the bar bending challenge tested sheer grip and explosive strength. Consequently, Dillon Doyle made an early statement, bending three bars in just 33.37 seconds. Notably, he set the fastest time of the event.

Meanwhile, Ray Foley and Jamie McNamara kept things tight. In fact, their times of 36.28 and 37.26 seconds showed just how narrow the margin for error had become. Clearly, every second mattered in this test of pressure and precision.

However, several athletes fell short of three bends. For instance, Cathal McNally and Gerard Buckley each completed just two bars. Still, they showed resilience in what proved to be a brutal start to the competition.

🪵 Event 2 — Incline Log Press (140kg for Reps, 75s Cap)

  1. Cillein Groom — 13 reps
    2T. Ruairi O’Hagan — 12 reps
    2T. Daniel McElroy — 12 reps
  2. Dillon Doyle — 11 reps
    5T. Jack Harkin — 10 reps
    5T. Cathal McNally — 10 reps
  3. Ivan Gannon — 8 reps
    8T. Jamie McNamara — 7 reps
    8T. Ray Foley — 7 reps
  4. Angelo Iannetta — 2 reps
  5. Matt Pollard — 1 rep
12T. Gerard Buckley — no lift
12T. Jordan Breen — no lift
12T. Shaun Diver — no lift
12T. Kyle McGowan — no lift
12T. Gavin McNamee — no lift

Following the opener, the log press brought upper body dominance into play. As expected, Cillein Groom thrived here with 13 crisp reps. Not surprisingly, he took the top spot again.

At the same time, both Ruairi O’Hagan and Daniel McElroy tied for second. In total, they managed 12 reps each, keeping the leaderboard battle intense. Significantly, their consistency started to show.

On the other hand, the event exposed a clear gap. Indeed, five athletes failed to press a single rep. Because of that, their chances of podium contention began to fade.

🚛 Event 3 — Truck Arm-Over-Arm Pull (7,500kg x 20m, 75s Cap)

  1. Cillein Groom — 44.20s
  2. Daniel McElroy — 44.50s
  3. Ruairi O’Hagan — 45.59s
  4. Gavin McNamee — 52.13s
  5. Gerard Buckley — 52.82s
  6. Matt Pollard — 53.38s
  7. Shaun Diver — 54.26s
  8. Kyle McGowan — 54.45s
  9. Cathal McNally — 55.50s
  10. Jack Harkin — 59.50s
  11. Ivan Gannon — 64.32s
  12. Jordan Breen — 65.75s
  13. Ray Foley — 18.45m
  14. Angelo Iannetta — 18.20m
  15. Jamie McNamara — 13.20m
  16. Dillon Doyle — 11.05m

Next came the grueling truck pull—a pure test of power and grit. As the rope tensed, Cillein Groom surged forward with a 44.20-second finish. In doing so, he once again proved his all-around dominance.

Similarly, Daniel McElroy delivered under pressure. With a 44.50-second time, he remained neck-and-neck with the top contenders. Likewise, Ruairi O’Hagan’s 45.59 was just enough to stay in the fight.

By contrast, others began to slip. For example, Jamie McNamara only reached 13.20 meters. Consequently, a single weak event now threatened to unravel earlier gains.

🚗 Event 4 — Car Deadlift Hold (300kg for Time)

  1. Jamie McNamara — 104.21s
  2. Cillein Groom — 102.84s
  3. Jordan Breen — 77.39s
  4. Ivan Gannon — 74.59s
  5. Ruairi O’Hagan — 73.55s
  6. Gerard Buckley — 72.47s
  7. Angelo Iannetta — 68.06s
  8. Kyle McGowan — 64.50s
  9. Matt Pollard — 64.26s
  10. Jack Harkin — 52.81s
  11. Daniel McElroy — 48.32s
  12. Dillon Doyle — 44.32s
  13. Ray Foley — 43.41s
  14. Cathal McNally — 39.60s
  15. Shaun Diver — 30.17s
  16. Gavin McNamee — 12.50s

Then came the static hold—the ultimate mental battle. Incredibly, Jamie McNamara led the charge with a 104.21-second hold. As a result, he vaulted back into relevance.

Soon after, Groom continued his top-tier performance. His 102.84-second hold kept him well in podium contention. Additionally, Jordan Breen and Ivan Gannon both crossed the 70-second mark.

Unfortunately, others faltered. Specifically, Dillon Doyle held for only 44.32 seconds, and Gavin McNamee lasted just 12.50. Ultimately, this event widened the gap between the leaders and the pack.

🧱 Event 5 — Loading Race (90–130kg Implements x5, 90s Cap)

  1. Daniel McElroy — 5 implements in 45.92s
  2. Ruairi O’Hagan — 5 in 46.61s
  3. Matt Pollard — 5 in 64.54s
  4. Cillein Groom — 4 in 31.16s
  5. Ray Foley — 4 in 45.81s
  6. Jack Harkin — 4 in 47.33s
  7. Cathal McNally — 4 in 48.43s
  8. Gerard Buckley — 4 in 50.88s
  9. Shaun Diver — 4 in 66.09s
  10. Ivan Gannon — 4 in 68.50s
  11. Jordan Breen — 4 in 68.93s
  12. Dillon Doyle — 3 in 37.49s
  13. Jamie McNamara — 3 in 39.85s
  14. Angelo Iannetta — 3 in 47.85s
  15. Kyle McGowan — 3 in 49.54s
  16. Gavin McNamee — no lift

To close out the contest, the loading race demanded speed and stamina. Impressively, Daniel McElroy completed all five implements in just 45.92 seconds. Consequently, he finished on a strong note.

Shortly after, Ruairi O’Hagan followed with a 46.61-second run. Because of his consistency all day, this kept him firmly in the hunt. In contrast, Matt Pollard also finished all five but took over a minute.

Meanwhile, others failed to complete the full set. For instance, Cillein Groom only loaded four. Despite that, his earlier dominance kept him near the top. In the end, podium positions came down to tenths of a second.
