The 2025 EPU European Classic Championships took place on March 23 in Malaga, Spain. More importantly, the event saw a historic performance from Sonita Muluh of Belgium. She shattered the International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) squat world record with a massive 318-kilogram lift. Even more impressively, she secured an IPF world record total of 735.5 kilograms.

Right from the start, Muluh’s dominance was undeniable. Her total outclassed runner-up Aquinn Onuoha of Great Britain by 97.5 kilograms, as Onuoha finished with 638 kilograms. Meanwhile, bronze medalist Amelie Mierger failed to surpass the 600-kilogram mark, ending with 582.5 kilograms. Clearly, Muluh was in a league of her own.

Not only did she break records, but she did so in style. Dressed entirely in orange—from her weightlifting shoes to her knee sleeves, singlet, wrist wraps, lifting belt, and even her hair—she commanded attention. Without a doubt, she came to Spain prepared to leave a lasting impression.

When it was time to lift, Muluh showed no hesitation. She walked the bar out, braced, and initiated her descent. As she powered through the ascent, she encountered slight resistance midway but never faltered. Finally, she locked out the lift and exhaled in relief. At no point did the attempt seem in doubt.

Muluh’s record-breaking squat added five kilograms to the previous mark, which she also held. According to Open Powerlifting, her 318-kilogram lift is now the heaviest squat ever recorded across all divisions and weight classes. Likewise, her 735.5-kilogram total edged out the previous all-time world record set by the USA’s Tamara Walcott by half a kilogram.
