The first event of the 2025 CrossFit Games exploded with endurance, strategy, and grit. Furthermore, the course covered a four-mile run, a 3,000-meter row, and a two-mile run, all staged along Albany’s Hudson River. The athletes showed up ready, but veterans Tia-Clair Toomey-Orr 🇦🇺 and Jeffrey Adler 🇨🇦 once again separated themselves from the field.
Toomey-Orr had the odds stacked against her. She started from the back of the pack due to her Open placement. Still, she surged forward from the first stride. Meanwhile, Adler kept close to Roman Khrennikov 🇷🇺 through the opening run and tactically took control in the final stages. As expected, both champions showed the poise and composure that comes only from elite-level experience.
Notably, the weather favored the athletes. With clear skies and mild temperatures, conditions were ideal for an endurance-heavy opener. For many, the challenge was pacing. For others, it was about survival. Ultimately, the day belonged to the athletes who managed both.
“At the start, because I had such a horrible Open finish, I was at the very, very back. So I shot out of the gate,” Toomey-Orr said in a post-event interview.
“I can’t control how fast or slow they go, so it was just a matter of staying in my own lane,” Toomey-Orr added.
“On the first four miles, my goal was to lead the pack and see what the pace was, and then if I could slow down, I would. If I couldn’t, then I would just keep the pace, and the boys held up more than I thought,” Adler explained after the race.
“I almost threw in the towel on the turn of the second mile, but I mean I gotta go for the 100 points and get as much as I can now because I’m going to lose some in the weekend somewhere,” said Adler.

Event 1 Recap: IE01 – Run/Row/Run
Toomey-Orr opened up a lead on the first run, though Aimee Cringle 🇮🇲 narrowed the gap on the row. Both athletes stepped off their machines nearly in sync. Still, Toomey-Orr pulled ahead on the final leg to seal her win.
Cringle followed close behind, finishing just 27 seconds after Toomey-Orr. Lucy Campbell 🇬🇧, Haley Adams 🇺🇸, and Arielle Loewen 🇺🇸 rounded out the top five. All three delivered solid performances, signaling a competitive field ahead.
In the men’s race, Adler and Khrennikov dueled for dominance. The Russian athlete surged ahead during the row, taking a 20-second lead into the final run. But Adler chipped away at that advantage, overtaking him in the last mile. Ricky Garard 🇦🇺 finished third, just 19 seconds behind second place.

Bottom Line: Familiar Faces Rise to the Top Once Again
From the opening gun, veterans wasted no time claiming their ground. Toomey-Orr and Adler showed early why they remain top contenders. Their performances underlined the difference that experience, composure, and pacing make.
Clearly, both athletes arrived in peak form and with a strategy in mind. They didn’t just compete; they executed. While the field is deep, it’s clear the pressure is on the rest to match their pace.
Now, all eyes turn to the next event. Will anyone disrupt this early momentum? Or will the veterans tighten their grip even further?
