The 2025 Beast of the East Strongman took place on June 7 in Fredericton, Canada. Ten strongmen competed, including two from the USA and eight representing the host country. The athletes faced five grueling events: the Arm-Over-Arm Pull, Axle Press, Max Deadlift, Sandbag Toss, and Conan’s Wheel.
Notably, Justin Legere from the United States claimed the top spot. He scored 41.5 points out of a possible 50. His victory margin was narrow but decisive, finishing 1.5 points ahead of runner-up Wesley Derwinsky.
Meanwhile, Maxime Boudreault secured third place. He earned 31.5 points, edging out fellow American Shawn Schellenger by the same 1.5-point difference. The competition was fierce among the leaders throughout the day.
Overall, the event highlighted intense international rivalry. Furthermore, the mix of Canadian and American athletes created a dynamic contest. It also set the tone for the 2025 strongman season in North America.

Arm-Over-Arm Pull
This opening event challenged the athletes to drag a massive weight over a fixed distance using only a rope. Speed was the determining factor for most, but for a couple of competitors, the event came down to how far they could drag the load before time ran out. The event set the tone for the day with a mix of blazing finishes and early struggles.
Joey Lavallée 🇨🇦 shocked the field by posting the fastest time: 29.09 seconds. Maxime Boudreault 🇨🇦 wasn’t far behind at 29.86 seconds, followed by American Shawn Schellenger 🇺🇸, who completed the pull in 30.95. These three set the early pace and positioned themselves as threats in the standings.
Justin Legere 🇺🇸 finished fifth with a solid 33.18, keeping him safely within striking range. However, Wesley Derwinsky 🇨🇦 had a rough start, placing seventh with 39.40 seconds—a result that put him at an early disadvantage in the title race.

Axle Press
The Axle Press featured three possible weights: 147 kg, 166 kg, and a massive 184 kg. Athletes were allowed to choose their weight, and those who successfully lifted heavier implements earned higher ranks. This event measured shoulder power and overhead stability, which separated the skilled pressers from the rest.
Justin Legere 🇺🇸 and Maxime Boudreault 🇨🇦 both lifted 166 kilograms for one successful rep, sharing the top spot. Their ability to complete that rep at a heavier weight gave them the advantage over others who managed multiple reps at lower loads. Wesley Derwinsky 🇨🇦 pressed 147 kg for two reps, landing in third place.
Shawn Schellenger 🇺🇸 and Joel Anderson 🇨🇦 each made one rep at 147 kg. Unfortunately, five athletes—including Lavallée 🇨🇦 and Edwards 🇨🇦—recorded no successful lifts. This created a points gap that would be hard to recover from in such a competitive field.
| Rank | Athlete | Nation | Reps & Weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1T | Justin Legere | 🇺🇸 | 1 rep @ 166 kg |
| 1T | Maxime Boudreault | 🇨🇦 | 1 rep @ 166 kg |
| 3 | Wesley Derwinsky | 🇨🇦 | 2 reps @ 147 kg |

Max Deadlift
The Max Deadlift was the day’s heaviest test. Athletes had to pull a loaded barbell from the ground to full lockout, with the heaviest successful lift determining the rank. It was a showdown of brute pulling strength, and the numbers soared past 370 kilograms for the top contenders.
Wesley Derwinsky 🇨🇦 bounced back from earlier events to win with a massive 379 kg lift. Legere 🇺🇸 wasn’t far behind at 370 kg, which allowed him to keep pace in the points race. Quinn Graham 🇨🇦 surprised the field by placing third with 347 kg—his best event of the day.
Four athletes tied for fourth, all lifting 329 kg: Schellenger 🇺🇸, Lavallée 🇨🇦, Anderson 🇨🇦, and Edwards 🇨🇦. Unfortunately, Maxime Boudreault 🇨🇦 and Jordan Dickens 🇨🇦 failed to complete a lift, costing Boudreault valuable ground in the overall standings.
| Rank | Athlete(s) | Nation | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Wesley Derwinsky | 🇨🇦 | 379 kg |
| 2 | Justin Legere | 🇺🇸 | 370 kg |
| 3 | Quinn Graham | 🇨🇦 | 347 kg |
| 4T | Shawn Schellenger | 🇺🇸 | 329 kg |
| 4T | Joey Lavallée | 🇨🇦 | 329 kg |
| 4T | Joel Anderson | 🇨🇦 | 329 kg |
| 4T | Luke Edwards | 🇨🇦 | 329 kg |

| 9T | Maxime Boudreault | 🇨🇦 | No lift |

Sandbag Toss
The Sandbag Toss measured explosive strength and coordination as athletes hurled sandbags over a high bar as fast as possible. Each competitor had to clear six bags over a 4.57-meter (15-foot) height, and time was the determining factor for ranking.
Boudreault 🇨🇦 came out flying with a first-place finish, tossing all six bags in just 18.42 seconds. Derwinsky 🇨🇦 followed with 21.43 seconds. Schellenger 🇺🇸 finished third with five bags in 22.53 seconds, keeping him competitive for the overall.
Legere 🇺🇸 placed fourth, getting five bags over in 25.15 seconds. Though a slight setback, it wasn’t enough to shake his lead. Meanwhile, Joel Anderson 🇨🇦 completed four bags in 23.38 seconds. The rest of the field failed to complete the toss or were too slow to make a dent in the standings.
| Rank | Athlete | Nation | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Maxime Boudreault | 🇨🇦 | 6 in 18.42 sec |
| 2 | Wesley Derwinsky | 🇨🇦 | 6 in 21.43 sec |
| 3 | Shawn Schellenger | 🇺🇸 | 5 in 22.53 sec |

Conan’s Wheel
The final event, Conan’s Wheel, measured pain tolerance and conditioning. Athletes carried a massive implement in front of them for as far as possible in a circular path. The distance covered determined the result, and every step counted toward the final podium.
Justin Legere 🇺🇸 needed to deliver—and he did. He covered 63.88 meters, just edging Derwinsky 🇨🇦, who circled 63.73 meters. The margin of 15 centimeters proved to be the difference in the overall title.
Luke Edwards 🇨🇦 took third with 57.99 meters, while Lavallée 🇨🇦 followed with 48.03. The rest of the field couldn’t crack the top four, and the leaderboard remained tight but unchanged at the top.
| Rank | Athlete | Nation | Distance |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Justin Legere | 🇺🇸 | 63.88 m |
| 2 | Wesley Derwinsky | 🇨🇦 | 63.73 m |
| 3 | Luke Edwards | 🇨🇦 | 57.99 m |
| 4 | Joey Lavallée | 🇨🇦 | 48.03 m |
