The illustrious Mr. Olympia brand, revered in the bodybuilding domain, has recently unveiled a revised qualification metric. As per their announcement on October 23 via Instagram, come 2024, only the podium finishers—the top three—will automatically qualify for the following year’s marquee event.
A Season of Evolution for the IFBB Pro League
This change is the latest in a series of innovative steps taken by both the Mr. Olympia brand and the overseeing body, the International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness (IFBB) Pro League. This season, in particular, has been brimming with modifications aimed at refining the competitive landscape.
Redefining the Classic Physique Division
One such notable modification was rolled out for the Classic Physique category. Adjustments were made to the height and weight criteria to foster a more leveled competitive ground, especially for competitors with shorter frames. Noteworthy is the immediacy of these changes—they were implemented without delay.
Men’s Physique: A Necessary Shift
In a parallel move, the Men’s Physique division underwent recalibration. Highlighted by the Vice President of the IFBB Pro League, Tyler Manion, the essence of the change was prompted by an emerging overlap—Men’s Physique contestants were increasingly mirroring their Classic Physique counterparts. This change will be operational from contests post the 2023 Mr. Olympia.

The Rationale Behind the New Rule
The recently introduced criterion for the Men’s Open Division isn’t just a change for the sake of it. It’s a strategic pivot, intended to amplify the significance of the Olympia lead-up events. As contenders navigate this renewed framework, each preparatory contest will draw heightened attention. Interestingly, while this criterion sets the Men’s Open Division apart, it harmonizes it with the other IFBB Pro League categories, where the top three have always been the golden standard.
In the ever-competitive realm of bodybuilding, such evolutions promise to redefine the sport, setting the stage for a captivating contest at the 2024 Mr. Olympia.
Mr. Olympia 2024: Only Top Three Clinch Automatic Spots
Delve into the rationale for the revamped qualification criteria:
“Who Automatically Qualifies for Next Year’s Olympia?
Here at the Olympia, we pay close attention to the hundreds of Olympia qualifier events held around the world. In recent years, the top 5 finishers in the Mr. Olympia division have received an automatic qualification to the following year’s Olympia, but after consulting with the IFBB Pro League we have decided to make a change.
Starting with this year’s event, only the top 3 in the Mr. Olympia will automatically qualify for the following year’s Olympia. We are making this change in an effort to add some additional star power to the various regional events held worldwide.
This change is being made with the full support of the IFBB Pro League as we all share an interest in maintaining a system that strengthens events at all levels.
